Legacies of Enslavement Research Hub Repository (Girton College)

 Repository

About:

Following work on the University of Cambridge’s historical links with the transatlantic slave trade, in 2020 Girton College launched its own research into the legacies of enslavement embedded in its foundation and development. The later creation of the Legacies of Enslavement Research Hub is one outcome of that effort. The Research Hub houses this Repository, which includes collections related to the legacies of enslavement research process and outcomes and the primary sources underpinning that story. All current records in the Repository are digital in nature. The Repository holds and collects records of Girton College’s Legacies of Enslavement Working Group; Girton College’s Legacies of Enslavement Committee; and primary source material originating from various other repositories in the UK and US. All primary source records are digital surrogates of their physical originals. The Repository seeks to: engage in restorative, reparative, and memorialisation activities connected to the College’s legacies of enslavement; support future research into remaining questions surrounding the College’s legacies of enslavement; support the research needs of current College members; respond to internal and external researchers’ emerging needs; preserve, centralise, and make links between the existing diversity of collections that tell the story of Girton College and slavery. Access arrangements: Access is via an online portal. Please contact the Legacies of Enslavement Research Hub Repository Archivist (“LE Archivist”) with any detailed queries. The LE Archivist is available Wednesdays and Thursdays, 9:00-17:00.
